How to Prepare for CAT Exam

CAT 2018 will be held by IIM Calcutta on November 25, 2018. Students may follow the following tips which was guided by mentors while I was preparing for CAT exam. Sharing tips on How to prepare for CAT

  • Take mock tests in an online environment — Students must take computer-based mock CAT so that they are familiar with the actual test environment
  • After every mock test, you must analyse your performance and evaluate your scoring areas based on exam pattern.
  • Focus on your strength — It’s important to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Going by your own evaluation, must focus on your strong areas and build on the same.
  • Must practice a lot so that you can make an instant connect with the question during your exam day. Regular practice with a scheduled stretch will not only help increase your question-solving speed but also make you habituated to sit for three hours.
  • Set target but be open to the number of attempts — Students should target min. and max. no. of questions that they will be attempting during the test. But experts suggest that students should be open on this number during their actual test in order to crack the test.
  • Time management — With 60 mins allotted for each section, students should first attempt the questions which they can solve quickly. If students are doubtful on a question at the first glance, they leave it in the first round and come back to it in sequence after they have completed the first round of attempts. As they quickly solve a few questions, it will instil a higher level of confidence to attempt the difficult questions during the second round of attempts.
  • Don’t compromise with accuracy — Time management is one of most important part of the CAT with prioritisation of questions becoming one of the key areas to success. As students go on attempting questions during the test, make sure that they compromise very little on accuracy.
  • Reverse action — In case students find questions a little difficult during the second round of their attempt, they must go reverse while solving the questions and scan the answer options first. Sometimes, answer options hold crucial clues towards solving the questions. They can also go by eliminating wrong options first, which reduces the number of answer options making it a little easier to find the right answer.
  • Relax well before your D-day — Prepare well before your date with the test. Spend a day before the test in a stress-free environment.
  • Be focused & keep calm during CAT — Once students enter the exam centre keep themselve focused on the test and maintain calm.
